Casa de la Costumbre

A walk along the quays brings you to the Custom House to see stunning graphics by Dublin-based artist James Earley.

Structures of Turbulence is an artwork that celebrates the materiality of stained glass through the medium of projected light. This site specific piece draws inspiration from the four coats of arms and ornamental sculptures on the Custom House’s facades that represent Ireland’s rivers.

Using macro photographs of handmade stained glass, visual similarities are drawn with the seeds (captured air bubbles within the glass) and turbulent water. The design also reacts to the architectural forms of the building, oscillatingbetween a symmetric and asymmetric composition.

The overarching intent of this piece is to harness scale, texture, colour and form to captivate the public, allowing them to experience the Custom House’s iconic facade in a unique and memorable manner.

Location: Custom House Quay, Dublin 1

James Earley

James Earley produces works that bring together traditions of painting, design and stained glass art.

He is an Irish artist living and working in Dublin, Ireland. Earley’s practice is rooted in graffiti and his family’s heritage in stained glass. He creates artworks that are timeless in their aesthetic and rich in their conceptual narrative.

The pieces are produced using digital tools to create analogue artworks. Fusing computer-aided fabrication with traditional hand-made techniques, he embraces technology to create complex, layered, highly charged compositions.

Earley’s work deals with wide ranging themes of power, societal imbalances, religion, politics and ultimately, the inhumanity of man. His artworks are a visual meditation and reflection of these themes.
